Patient no-shows have always been an issue for health care providers. According to the American Osteopathic Association, no-show rates in an outpatient setting can range between 23 percent and 34 percent, resulting in a loss of 14 percent of anticipated daily revenue. Medical Economics highlighted the results of a recent study conducted at Nassau University Medical Center. The study looked at the reasons patients were no-shows. Once the reasons that contributed to patients missing appointments were understood, a interdisciplinary approach was used to formulate ideas to overcome the barriers to patients keeping scheduled appointments. After implementing changes, based on patient no-show information, the clinic saw a 34 percent reduction in no-shows in the fourth quarter of 2015 compared to the same period the year before, while patient visits were up 13 percent during the study period.
