Providers and Insurance Exchanges – Two articles this week bring healthcare provider’s concerns to the forefront. In a recent survey conducted by the Medical Group Management Association suggest that more than half of the more than 1,000 physician practices surveyed across the country indicated they were undecided as to whether they will participate in health plans sold on the state insurance exchanges. The practical concern is if an orthopedic surgeon treats a patient who has health coverage through an insurance exchange and the patient requires hip surgery, the patient may need to be cleared by a cardiologist. What happens if the orthopedic cannot find a cardiologist participating in the insurance exchange’s plan to evaluate the patient? Medicare Advantage Plans and Decreased Payments to Providers? – Twenty-eight percent of Medicare beneficiaries are currently enrolled in Medicare Advantage (Part C) Plans. Medicare Advantage Plans are estimated to cost between 9 – 13% more than the costs for Traditional Medicare. Efforts to bring Medicare Advantage Plans more in line with Traditional Medicare costs are addressed in the Affordable Care Act. Due to reductions in payments as a result of sequestration and Medicare spending reductions, Medicare Advantage insurers contend they need to pass these cuts on to the providers. The question is whether these cuts are allowable under the contracts entered into by the providers and Medicare Advantage plans?
