Reality Check – Nurse Practitioners Are Needed To Meet The Demand For Health Care

In a recent presentation at the American Enterprise Institute conference, Peter Buerhaus, a registered nurse and health care economist, told his audience that nurse practitioners are ready and able to fill the health care access gap.  Relying partially on data from the Association of American Medical Colleges, Mr. Buerhaus predicted that the increasing health care needs of Baby Boomers will require more health care providers.  He encouraged state licensing boards to reduce or eliminate onerous nurse practitioner licensure requirements and regulations.
